What a mess of a week!

With everything that has been going on this week I haven’t had time to post.

  • Last Wednesday we had a small tornado close to home. It was only an EF1. We had no school that day. And we had tree limbs galore!
  • That same day my Rooster attacked me.
  • My husband’s knee is swelled and hurting.
  • Little Man has a rash all over his body. Rushed him to the doctor thinking it was an allergic reaction to something. Nope! Come to find out it is a viral infection running its course through his body. Funny part of this story: he went to the school nurse on Monday and she told him he had sun burn! Now I would like to know what planet she got her RN because where I live it has rained for a week!
  • Been trying new bread recipes!
  • Ruby the rabbit has decided to eat the baseboards. The hubby ain’t to happy about that.
  • Got my grow light system set up to start my vegetables inside before planting outside. (I will post pictures later!)

In the country anything is possible!

Until next time,

Don’t make plans in the country, they always change!

Find Happiness in the small things!

The weather around here is far from what it should be. We are almost at the end of February and the temperatures are almost 70*. We really didn’t have much snow this year.

This morning as I was driving, I was thinking about the small simple things that are all around us that we miss daily. Simple things that could bring us happiness and joy, if we would just take a look around.

It is hard to see but there is a farm tractor in the fog!

The top of an old country church! I find it kind of peaceful.

An old jar that my little boy and I found behind our house!

These are just some things that I came across today! Imagine all the things that we pass on a daily basis and don’t pay attention because we are to busy or distracted!

Look for the small simple things in life. Take a moment and just slow down! You never know what you will miss when your not looking for it!

Until next time,

Find happiness in the small things!

6 Tips to help Simplify your Life!

In today’s crazy fast paced world, we sometimes forget the simple things! My simple things may be different than your simple things. So I suggest everyone to really sit and think about what you view as simple!

I have sat and thought many times how I could bring back the simple things in my life! I have come up with 6 Tips that I think would help bring the stress levels down! No body every said life was easy! But just maybe we could calm our minds and destress our lives by just doing simple things!

  1. Fruits & Vegetables! Learn how to grow and provide your family with fresh fruits and vegetables by gardening and planting your own orchards (if possible)! If you know how the fruits and vegetables are grown, you have less to worry about if it is going to make you sick! You don’t have to have 100 acres to grow vegetables. There are many posts on the web to teach you how to grow vegetables any where from an apartment to large spaces.
  2. Food in general! If we don’t have food we will not survive! Learn how to preserve food, no mater if it is food you grow on your own or food that you buy from the store. Learn how to cook with what you already have. It’s not a bad idea to have a small stock pile either. Just encase something happens in the world!🌎
  3. Organization is key! If you have a lot of clutter… It can bring lots of unwanted stress to your life. Find and learn how to organize every aspect of your life. From food, grocery lists, laundry, closets and cupboards, to bills and finances!
  4. If you research about all the forgotten skills of our pioneers, you will find many skills that you could still apply to you every day life. For example dryers have not been on this planet for very long. The pioneers used to hang dry all their laundry! Imagine if you cut back on using the dryer, by hanging your clothes how much money would you save on your electric bill? I don’t know about you… But if my electric bill would go down some, so wouldn’t my stress level. $400.00 electric bills would raise anyone’s stress levels!
  5. Learn to raise some sort of livestock! One of the easiest livestock’s to raise in my opinion would be Chickens! Not only would you be raising your own meat but chickens provide you with eggs daily. No more buying eggs at the store. They are better for you too! In my house we eat eggs daily!
  6. Family! Family! Family! In this technology bearing world we forget to sometimes just sit down and enjoy our families! If you need to set aside a date and time twice a month just to reconnect with each other, then do so! The feelings generated by spending time with the ones you love can not come from any other place! We are not getting any younger! And none of us stay here forever. So put the phones down… Lock them away for a night, and get a board game out, or fix dinner together. Just have fun!

To some, these may not seem simple! But trust me if you work very hard at these, one day you will no longer think about them, you will just do them. They will come naturally to you. If you find ways to bring down your stress level… I promise you life will become much simpler!

Until next time,

Don’t Stress, just relax!

Chicken Crazy!

Due to a nasty ol’fox I went from having 18 chickens and 3 guineas down to 6 chickens and 1 guinea! Here are the 7 that I have left. My little boy helped with the names!

⬆ This is Black Beauty! She is one of the babies my little boy and I hatched out in June 2016. Her personality is amazing. I truly love this bird!

⬆ This is not a very good picture, because she wouldn’t sit still for me. This is Snow White! I rescued her from being the last one in the box at a local feed store. She is a little flighty!

⬆This is Pumpkin. One of my originals!

⬆ This is Cinnimon. She is one of my originals.

⬆ This is Clover. My little boys 4-H chicken that he received for his first year in 4-H as a Cloverbud!

⬆This is Spirit! He is our main man. My little boy and I hatched him out,  June 2016!

⬆ This is the Guinea. We have never come up with a name.

The poor husband got the blame for the first 3 birds that I found dead. I was for positive his coon dogs had been involved. He kept telling me “No! They won’t touch your birds.” I didn’t believe him.

Early one Saturday morning I was at the kitchen window washing up the breakfast dishes when I heard something hit the side of the house in front of me. Silly me took off running out the back door in my lavender fluffy bath robe to find out what was going on. Just the sound made me think that the birds were trying to get on top of the house. I walked down to where I heard the noise and I didn’t see anything. So I turned around to go back inside.

Low and be hold… When I was getting ready to go through the door here comes my chickens running scared! They ran right past me. 3 seconds later around the corner came a big red fox! Boy did he look healthy!!!

Not thinking of what I was doing I chased the ol’fox clear acrossed my yard in my lavender bath robe, screaming my head off at it. By the time I got it to the woods I turned back around to go back to the house. Looking at the back door… There was my husband doubled over laughing his head off at me!

I didn’t find it to funny at the time. A week later my husband didn’t find it funny anymore either when he was building me a predator proof chicken coop in the hottest part of summer!

The learning curve could have come sooner, or I wouldn’t have any birds left. Not only did we predator proof the coop we put the coon dogs all around it so if something like the ol’ fox would happen to come around they will bark and scare it off.

It’s been well over 6 months and I haven’t had a problem since! I just feel guilty for having to pen my birds up. I loved letting them free range. But I am here to tell you… If you let your birds free range you are taking the chance of a predator having a free meal!!

Until next time,

Love your chickens!

Country Girl!!

Driving home this morning from work, my mind started wheeling. I guarantee you if you were sitting beside me you would have seen the hamster wheels turning in my head.

I was thinking about all these definition. These definitions I found on Google.

Homesteading: is a lifestyle of being self-sufficient.

Self-Sufficient Living: being able to live life by providing your own needs with out external assistance. (Food, water, electric, and heat)

Simple Living: is a number of different voluntary practices to simplify one’s life. Example: minimalism (reducing ones possessions to the bare necessities.)

Wow! Is what ran through my head! Although I would love to be able to call my lifestyle one of these at the moment I am no where close.

Driving down the old dirt country roads, it hit me… I was born and raised a country girl. A country girl thru and thru. I have several skills under my belt but I want to learn many more.
My definitions of a country girl:

I love working in the dirt. Having dirt under my nails. Wiggling my toes in the warm fresh plowed dirt. I love planting vegetables in my garden knowing in a short time I get to pick fresh veggies!

I love to go fishing! Coming home and filleting bluegills and bass, and then frying them up is the best dinner.

I love to go deer hunting with my husband. I will tell you though I have a hard time sitting still in the woods waiting on a big white tail deer. I get all excited thinking about all the meat we will be able to put in the freezer.

I love to be out in the woods just listening to the sounds. During the seasons my family loves to go mushroom hunting, and berry picking.

I love my animals! But I also feel animals all have a purpose. I love my chickens but they also have a job to do. They need to provide me with food which are eggs if they don’t provide then they will provide another way with meat.

My feelings are I can not label myself. So I am going to try and learn and research as much as my brain will allow on the life styles that I dream of one day living! Until then I’m still working on my 2017 Goals. If I can accomplish my goals I am one step closer to the life style I want to live. In my mind you can not become a homesteader over night. It takes years and years of practice and research. So I will start my journey with:

I’m a country girl working towards a homesteading life!

Till next time…

Take care!

Have you ever just had a really terrible morning? And then from then on out everything seems to fall apart?
That was my morning this morning!

It all started yesterday. I was fixing me a cup of coffee in my one cup Mr. Coffee coffee maker when the electric decided it was going to surge (which means goes out comes back on then goes out in a flash.) Yeap well… I do believe it ruined my coffee maker!!!

I wasn’t to worried about it yesterday. I figured I would let it set and it would fix it self. NOPE!!!

I woke up this morning went and started it up…No coffee! I was starting to panic. Then I remembered my 10 cup coffee pot sitting in the spare room. I ran and grabbed it. Washed it up. And started a pot. By this time it was almost time for me to walk out the door. By the time the thing was done, I got three drinks and then had to leave the rest on the counter. I was now late! Grrr… Nothing was going my way this morning!

And this is why I would love to live the simple life. It might be hard work, and I might not get a cup of coffee within a minute but at least an old coffee pot on the wood stove always produced coffee no matter how long it took!

This story is a prime example of where our lives have turned. We rely on electricity for everything. When something goes wrong… We seem to be lost!

Do you ever have anything like that happen to you? If so how do you get all your stars lined back up so you don’t feel off all day long?
